I want to buy a stop snoring mouthpiece solution appliance. Where is a good place to get one and will it make a difference in my snoring?
Thanks, Lynne
Dear Lynne,
The best place to obtain a snoring device for those who snore mild to moderate is by a dentist with expertise in treating sleep apnea. Impressions are taken of your teeth and a custom fitted appliance is made. The appliance keeps your lower jaw slightly forward while sleeping to keep the airway open and depresses your tongue so breathing doesn’t stop, therefore greatly decreasing your snoring. At first, the appliance may be uncomfortable to wear and you may have to have it adjusted by your dentist several times in the beginning, however wearing the device will greatly benefit you in having a good night’s sleep.
Snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, however not all people who snore have apnea which can lead to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even depression if left untreated overtime. Common causes of snoring are being overweight, sleeping on our backs, alcohol, smoking, large tonsils, a deviated septum, and a family history of sleep apnea. Making changes in ones diet, decreasing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, and sleeping on ones side can decrease snoring, however if your snoring is severe, you may want to see your physician who may recommend that you participate in a sleep study to determine what treatment options are best for you.
