I have a bridge across my center front teeth and lateral incisor. The bridge is for my missing right central incisor, and the lateral incisor had a root canal before the bridge was placed. Because so little of the tooth remained, my dentist placed a post in it for additional support.
I got the bridge in early 2024, but the lateral incisor and post broke at the gumline. That leaves the entire bridge attached to just one tooth.
I’m concerned about leaving the bridge this way and would like to know whether the broken post can be removed and replaced. Thanks. Josiah
Josiah,
Several factors make your situation complicated. Because the post has fractured at the gumline, the dentist cannot easily grip it. Even techniques that sometimes loosen posts may not work without removing additional surrounding tooth structure.
Since this affects tooth #7—the lateral incisor—drilling away more structure would leave very limited support for a new post. That weak foundation reduces the likelihood of lasting success.
Gaining proper access would require cutting the crown off the bridge. After that step, replacing the entire bridge typically becomes necessary. This is one disadvantage of bridges compared with implants—damage to a single supporting tooth can mean replacing everything.
At this point, treatment decisions focus on durability rather than short-term repair.
Is a Replacement Post an Option?

A replacement post may not last longer than the original and could fail sooner, especially if strong lateral biting forces affect your front teeth. Repeated breakage often signals the need for a different long-term approach.
Dentists usually compare the most realistic treatment paths before recommending next steps:
- Two dental implants to replace the missing tooth and tooth #7 (lateral incisor)
- A four-unit bridge extending across the front teeth for support
Because a longer bridge increases stress on neighboring teeth, it may carry greater risk in someone with a history of fractures. Your dentist will explain your treatment options and whether implants are an option.
