While I was pregnant in 2023, my gums were so swollen that they hid my lower teeth. Since then, the gums haven’t returned to their former position and feel detached. Is there a treatment for this, and would gum contouring be a possible solution? – Thanks. Liliana from NM
Liliana,
It’s common for pregnant women to develop gingivitis. During this time, gums become especially sensitive, swell easily, and may bleed.
Your dentist can help you refine your daily habits. Brush more often, focus on cleaning the gumline, floss carefully, and, in some cases, rinse with 3% hydrogen peroxide for a short period. Avoid overusing peroxide because it can reduce healthy bacteria and even lead to yeast overgrowth.
Since your swelling seems more advanced, schedule an appointment for your dentist to check your gums. If good home care hasn’t improved them, we’ll need to confirm whether something else is contributing. Avoid gum contouring or surgery until the irritation is fully controlled to prevent the swelling from returning otherwise.
