Emergency Dentist Said the Wrong Tooth Needed to be Fixed

Posted on January 13, 2017 by writeradmin.

I have some pretty severe tooth pain in one of my teeth. I know exactly which tooth hurts. I went to an emergency dentist because I don’t have a dentist of my own. He told me that it’s a tooth next to the one I showed him which has the problem. I can tell exactly which tooth hurts. Could he be just trying to get me to fix an extra tooth to get more money?  I didn’t let him move forward because I wanted to make sure he wasn’t cheating me first, but I’m still hurting. Now I feel like the appointment was wasted.

Bobby R. – Denver

Bobby,

I don’t even know which dentist you went to, but I can tell you with almost complete certainty that the emergency dentist isn’t trying to trick you. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the phrase “referred pain”, but that’s likely what you’re experiencing. That’s when you feel pain in one part of your body, but it’s actually coming from a different part of your body.

It sounds like the dentist wanted to work on the source of the pain and not just the tooth you thought was hurting. I know this is a new dentist for you, so you hadn’t built up trust, but in the long run he was trying to not only do the right thing for you, but his actions would save you money.

He could have appeased you and just worked on the tooth that hurt you and said you also had another tooth that needs help, charging you double. He didn’t.

However, if you’re still not sure and want a second opinion, I’m going to make a suggestion that you don’t tell the second dentist who you went to and what their diagnosis was. Just tell him you have a toothache, tell him where, and leave him to make his diagnosis. If he comes to the same conclusion as the other dentist, you’ll know you’re on the right track.

What I don’t want you to do is put off getting treatment. This is likely a tooth infection and it will spread. I’m not saying this is you, but sometimes when a patient is putting off care even while in pain, it is actually because they have dental anxiety. If that happens to be you, be aware that sedation dentistry is an option. It will give you a pain-free dental experience.

Don’t want to be lectured by dentist

Posted on March 16, 2016 by writeradmin.

I haven’t been to the dentist in years. I’m having a problem with one of my teeth now. I know that is my fault, but I don’t really want to get a lecture from the dentist. If I liked them, I’d go. I don’t. How do I avoid a preachy dentist?

Marcus G. – Little Rock, AR

Marcus,

First, because you are currently having a problem, you’ll need to see a dentist right away. My suggestion is you get to an emergency dentist. You likely have a tooth infection, which will spread to other parts of your body.

It’s hard to know what a dentist’s chairside manner will be like without visiting with them, but one thing I would suggest is looking for emergency dentists that specifically mention treating fearful patients.

If they mention options for fearful patients on their site, then they’re likely not going to judge or lecture you. They understand what it means to have dental anxiety.

Some, like Dr. Perry, even specifically mention on their site that you won’t be judged or lectured.  So, you might look for something to that effect as well.

Terrible toothache with terrible fear of the dentist

Posted on October 26, 2015 by writeradmin.

I have a horrible toothache. I know there’s a problem, but I don’t have a dentist. Even if I did, I wouldn’t likely go.  I haven’t gone in ages.  Mostly because they terrify me.  Even if I could get past the fear, I definitely wouldn’t want a lecture. Is there something I can do about it at home?

Audrey L. – Kentucky

Audrey,

You’re definitely not the first person to avoid the dentist.  Many people feel the way you do.  If you have a toothache, you likely have a tooth infection.  You’ll want to deal with this as soon as possible, because it will do nothing but spread.

Unfortunately, there is no way to treat this at home.  You will have to bite the bullet and see and actual dentist.  I do realize you don’t have one, but there are emergency dentists who will see you quickly. Many will see you the same day you call.

I have more good news for you too.  If you go to an emergency dentist who uses sedation, they’re likely to be accostomed to fearful patients.  You won’t be judged or lectured. In fact, you’ll also be treated to a pain free appointment.

Don’t put this off.

Broken tooth must be pulled – do I need an oral surgeon?

Posted on May 31, 2011 by kkzeluff.

I lost a filling in one of my molars a few years ago. I lived with the missing filling for quite a while, but then the tooth broke, and it got too painful to ignore. I had a root canal treatment done, but never went back in for the dental crown placement, because I just can’t handle that much time in a dentist’s office. The temporary filling fell out about six months later, and I learned to work around the tooth, but recently it has become really painful again. I know I have to go back in, but I can hardly stand the thought of it.

I saw a dentist and he told me the tooth is infected, and that there really isn’t enough of it to save. He said that it has to be pulled, and that the condition of the tooth means they will have to cut both gum and bone. He said it would be best to have an oral surgeon do this under anesthesia, especially given my anxiety about dental work, but that is just not in my budget. He said he COULD do the procedure under a local, but that an oral surgeon would be best.

My question is, can most general dentists competently handle this type of procedure? I don’t want to spend all that extra money to go to an oral surgeon, but every time I think about getting it done my heart pounds and my hands sweat and I feel sick. Pretty intense. I think I’ll calm down some if I think my dentist is really competent to handle this.

William in Orlando

Dear William,

It sounds like you really need to a have a candid conversation with your dentist. Either he is comfortable doing the procedure, or he isn’t, and it sounds as if he will be honest with you about that. It is also encouraging that he has acknowledged that your fear needs to be considered and handled with compassion. You could also consider seeking the services of a dentist that does sedation dentistry, which they may also advertise as gentle dentistry. Very often, the use of nitrous oxide with an oral sedative is the right combination to reduce anxiety and control pain so that the appointment is much less traumatic.
